Adobe Camera Raw Workflow: Crop and Subject Masking

Objective
This SOP outlines how to crop an image, create subject and background masks, and apply targeted adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw. The goal is to enhance the subject while reducing distractions in the background using non-destructive editing.

Key Steps

1. Crop the image using composition guidelines 0:26
  • Select the Crop Tool in Adobe Camera Raw.
  • Use a composition rule such as the rule of thirds to position the subject.
  • Press Enter to apply the crop.
  • Keep cropping in Adobe Camera Raw when possible because it is non-destructive and can be adjusted later.


2. Create a subject mask and refine the subject 1:31
  • Open the Masking tools and choose Subject or another appropriate auto mask.
  • Allow Adobe Camera Raw to automatically detect the main subject.
  • Confirm the subject selection is accurate before making adjustments.
  • Use the mask controls if needed, but in this workflow no feathering or edge shifting was applied.


3. Adjust the subject’s tone and color 1:49
  • Adjust Exposure slightly to reduce brightness.
  • Adjust Highlights to recover bright areas.
  • Adjust Shadows slightly to add depth.
  • Adjust Blacks to establish a stronger black point.
  • Leave Contrast unchanged unless the image needs additional separation.
  • Keep Temperature unchanged if the current color balance looks correct.
  • I adjusted the tint to give my reds a boost in this image.
  • Increase Saturation slightly if the subject needs more color intensity.
  • Add a small amount of Texture and Clarity to sharpen detail.
  • Increase Sharpening slightly for a cleaner subject appearance.


4. Create and adjust the background mask 3:38
  • Click the plus (+) icon in the masking panel to create a new mask.
  • Choose Background to isolate everything except the subject.
  • Adjust Exposure to make the background less prominent.
  • Adjust Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks to soften the background and push attention toward the subject.
  • Adjust Temperature/Tint as needed to enhance background greens or other supporting colors.
  • Increase Saturation slightly if the background colors should remain visible.
  • Reduce Sharpness all the way down to keep the background soft and prevent it from competing with the subject.
Cautionary Notes
  • Do not over-adjust exposure, saturation, or sharpening; subtle changes usually produce a more natural result.
  • Verify the subject mask is accurate before editing, especially around edges and fine details.
  • Use non-destructive cropping in Adobe Camera Raw whenever possible so the crop can be revised later.
  • If a color adjustment does not look right, reset the slider rather than forcing the change.
  • Background adjustments should support the subject, not make the image look artificial.
Tips for Efficiency
  • Start with crop first to establish composition before detailed masking.
  • Use Subject and Background masks to speed up targeted edits instead of manual brushing when the auto-selection is accurate.
  • Make small slider changes and review the image after each adjustment.
  • If a slider behaves unexpectedly, double-click the label or value to reset it.
  • Keep the subject edits and background edits separate so it is easier to troubleshoot and refine the image later.
